Kenya’s Garissa University has reopened nine months after a Somalian Islamist group attacked the campus and killed 148 students, reports the BBC.
Many Christians were singled out for killing by the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab gunmen in what was the deadliest attack on Kenyan soil since the US Embassy bombings in 1998.
Police have established a post on the campus to tighten security. Students transferred to Garissa’s constituent college, Moi university, during the closure; the Christian Union Chairman spoke movingly of his post-traumatic stress.
Staff are already at work while students are due to return to classes next Monday. Earlier today many people posted defiant messages that the Kenyan spirit will not be broken as #GarissaUniversityReopens began trending on Twitter.
