A new report investigating the rape and murder of two Kachin Christian teachers in Myanmar accuses the government of “systematic cover up”.
Produced by the Kachin Women’s Association of Thailand and the Legal Aid Network, to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the deaths of Maran Lu Ra, 20, and Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin, 21, ’Justice Delayed, Justice Denied’ alleges that a high-ranking officer was involved in covering up the crime carried out by soldiers in a remote village in Shan State.
“Everyone knows who did this crime but we just don’t have the power to investigate the evidence to find out who exactly the perpetrators are,” said Rev. Samson Hkalam of the Kachin Baptist Convention, the organisation which employed the two women.
The two women were both found dead in their rooms on a church compound on 20 January, 2015. As police carried out DNA testing on 25 soldiers in a bid to identify the killer(s), Myanmar’s military threatened legal action against anyone alleging that the military was responsible for the women’s deaths.
