The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has announced that it will raise funds from its member churches to help victims of terror attacks in the northern states.
The funds will be raised as part of a special offering to be collected in churches on Sunday 7 December.
Of Nigeria’s approximately 165 million people, over 81 million are Christians but there is a fault-line running between the predominantly Christian south and the predominantly Muslim north, where the Church is under enormous pressure in 12 Sharia-run states, including three in a state of emergency due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, emphasized the need for the gesture, saying ‘we cannot stay aloof’.
The Association, which claims to be the largest ‘umbrella’ organisation to represent Christians, expects a ‘huge response’ from its member churches. The money raised will also help assist the many internally displaced people from the north who’ve fled to various parts of the country.
