Vietnamese Christian Nguyen Van Dai says he is regularly intimidated by security officers, despite being recently freed from house arrest.
The prominent human rights lawyer was put under house arrest in 2011 after spending four years in prison on a charge of “conducting propaganda against the State”.
Recently Dai was prevented from going to church by ten police officers who demanded to see documents proving he’d completed his probation. He’d never received any.
Unidentified assailants have also threatened him outside his house. When Dai calls the police, he says he receives no assistance.
He’s said that now his house arrest is over, he’s afraid to leave home for fear he will be attacked. In 2013, he was prevented from meeting US Dep. Ass. Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor who planned to meet him while in Vietnam.
